LANESBORO, MINN. —The Commonweal Theatre Company proudly presents the capstone production of the 2014 Apprentice Company, Mary’s Wedding playing March 19 through March 29.
From Canadian playwright Stephen Massicotte, Mary’s Wedding tells the story of a young couple named Charlie and Mary who are falling love. Their blossoming relationship, however, is tested when Charlie is called to defend his country at the onset of World War I. The couple promise to write each other every day, but when letters are not enough, they are able to transcend reality and come together again in Mary’s dream. The play asks what it can mean to truly love someone. Commonweal Resident Ensemble Member Megan K. Pence will direct. “We found this script to be very timely,” says Pence, “seeing as it is one of the centennial years of the First World War. It’s rare to find a piece that features a first-hand account of war and yet blends it so seamlessly with a love story that you almost forget that war is even a part of the backdrop. The play exists as a dreamscape, which gives us a lot of freedom to play around with conventions and we’re excited to bring our audiences on an imaginative journey where time and space coalesce as they experience Mary and Charlie’s relationship both backwards and forwards.” The current Commonweal Apprentice Company features Vincent Hannam and Anna Lee Murray, both of whom appeared in Arcadia last season.
The cast of Mary’s Wedding will comprise the duo, with Murray as not only the eponymous Mary Chalmers, but also as Lieutenant Gordon Flowerdew (based on the real-life Canadian war hero). Hannam is cast as Mary’s lover and innocent soldier, Charlie Edwards. Ashley Willingham, a member of the 2015 Apprentice Class, leads the production team as stage manager with Commonweal company members Gary Danciu as sound designer and Thomas White providing lighting design. The production’s costumes and props are being designed by Hannam and Murray, respectively.
The Commonweal Theatre’s Apprentice Program is a ten-month commitment designed for recent college graduates or young professionals with commensurate experience who would benefit from a prolonged relationship with a small professional theatre company. Focused primarily on experiential learning through a traditional mentor/apprentice relationship, the program affords artistic opportunities, regular classroom instruction, and administrative responsibilities in the areas of Marketing, Development, and Production.
Funding for Commonweal Theatre’s programming is provided in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature, a grant from the McKnight Foundation, and private funders.

Saturday January 24th, the Commonweal Theatre will be presenting an evening of original ten minute plays written, directed, and acted by the in-house talent of the company. The idea was born out of the desire to flex other artistic muscles that we don’t necessarily get to work on as much as others.
Hence the night, which will be a culmination of six hours of rehearsal (for each show) and a short tech spread over the course of the week. Included in the programming is my play, U.S. Grant and Lincoln Log, which I have also directed. The night also features I died and went to heaven… written and performed by Tod Petersen, Five Dollars by Tom Willoughby and directed by Bailey Otto, The Brothers Two by Gary Danciu and directed by David Hennessey, The Server by Scott Dixon and directed by Megan K. Pence, and Rage at the Light by Harold N. Cropp and directed by Ana Hagedorn.
It’s been a very rewarding week of work and I know we’re ready to get these little beauties up on their feet- for one night only!
In November of 2013, I served as the production dramaturg and (to a lesser extent) an assistant director to Shipwrecked! An Entertainment- The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (As Told by Himself) at Theatre UCF in Orlando, FL. It was my fifth and last year in college so I was soaking up every bit of the experience I could. I had not often spent significant time on “the other side of the table”, from the auditions all the way through tech week. It was a a lesson in just how much time and effort goes into a play, from all aspects of the production. Truly a remarkable process that I took a lot from and relished wholeheartedly.
NOW, I am SUPER ecstatic about “BroadwayWorld- Orlando” recognizing Shipwrecked! in three different categories:
Best Play (Non-Professional)
Best Direction of a Play (Non-Professional) for the one-and-only Mark Brotherton.
Best Lead Actor in a Play (Non-Professional) for the ever-classy Eric Early.
They, and Theatre UCF, deserve every bit of recognition that comes their way, and I am only too proud and thankful to have been able to play my part on the team. CONGRATULATIONS!
I am proud and thankful to have been a part of Leveling Up this past year at Theatre UCF, that allowed me to showcase all the work I had achieved during my undergraduate career. The show was a milestone for me as I got to work with some of the most talented people I know- and now call good friends. Praise and thanks to Mark Routhier for his electric staging that just seemed instinctual. To Patrick Sylvester and Patrick Mounce with whom I’ve never had more fun with in a play just being dudes in a basement and my sparring partner Gracie Winchester who always kept me on my toes. And of course, Deborah Zoe Laufer for writing a play that says so much more about the way we live than most. Check it out wherever and whenever you can!
Now the theatre critic for the Orlando Sentinel, Matt Palm, has named Leveling Up as one of his top ten plays of the year and that, my friends, reflects the wealth of talent I was surrounded by last winter. Let the good times roll!
I am super excited to share the trailer to the short film, The Fool, from Mischief Films! Directed by my brother Max Hannam, we co-produced this beauty last spring and are currently submitting it to film festivals across the country. We have high hopes, so check it out for yourself!
